Quick answer: Every Indian PAN follows the same structure: 5 letters + 4 digits + 1 letter (10 characters total). The 4th letter identifies what type of holder it is — P=Person, C=Company, H=HUF, F=Firm/LLP, T=Trust, A=Association of Persons, B=Body of Individuals, L=Local Authority, J=Artificial Juridical, G=Government. The 5th letter is usually the first letter of the holder's surname (for individuals).

Decoding a PAN: ABCPK1234L

  • A — series (ABC for the period when issued, internal IT department code)
  • B — series
  • C — series
  • P — holder type code (P = Person / Individual)
  • K — first letter of the holder's last name
  • 1234 — sequence number
  • L — alphabetic check character

The check character (last letter) is computed by an internal algorithm; it ensures typing errors are caught. Use the PAN Validator to confirm format and decode the holder type.

Using the PAN Validator

The PAN Card Validator checks:

  2. 4th-character validity (decodes holder type)
  3. All caps + no spaces

It doesn't hit the IT department database — for verification of an actual PAN's existence, use the IT e-filing portal's “Verify PAN” service.
