Why exam photos get rejected

  • Wrong dimensions. UPSC wants 3.5×4.5 cm; SSC wants the same in px (350×450). Mixing them up = rejection.
  • File size too big. Most online forms cap at 50-300 KB. A modern phone takes 4-5 MB photos by default.
  • Wrong background. White is safest. Light blue / light grey works for some forms; coloured / textured backgrounds get rejected.
  • Wrong format. JPG is universal. PNG works for some, fails for others. Stick with JPG unless told otherwise.
  • Coloured borders or watermarks. Most photo studios add these — strip them off before uploading.

Tips for a good govt-form photo

  • Plain white wall behind you. Good lighting from the front, no shadows.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed. UPSC and passport-style smiling is OK if it doesn't show teeth significantly.
  • Look directly at the camera. Photos taken at an angle often get rejected.
  • No glasses if possible — reflections trip up automated checks.
  • Hair shouldn't cover the face. Ears should be visible (some govt forms require it).
  • Solid, plain clothing — avoid loud patterns.
