Cooler vs AC — running cost in Indian summer
Air coolers cost ₹150/month to run, ACs cost ₹1,500-3,000. Here is when a cooler is enough, when AC pays off, and the inverter-vs-non-inverter math.

Quick frame: A symphonic air cooler runs at ~150-200 W; a 1.5-ton 3-star AC runs at ~1,500 W. Over 10 hours a day for a 90-day Indian summer, that is the difference between ₹500/month and ₹4,000/month on your electricity bill.
Running cost math
For 8 hours/day usage at ₹8/kWh tariff:
| Appliance | Power | Daily | Monthly | Summer (90 days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symphony Diet 22T cooler | 170 W | 1.4 kWh × ₹8 = ₹11 | ₹330 | ₹990 |
| Pedestal fan | 70 W | 0.6 kWh = ₹4.5 | ₹135 | ₹405 |
| 1.5-ton 3⭐ non-inverter AC | 1,550 W | 12.4 kWh = ₹99 | ₹2,970 | ₹8,910 |
| 1.5-ton 5⭐ inverter AC | 950 W (avg) | 7.6 kWh = ₹61 | ₹1,830 | ₹5,490 |

When a cooler is enough
- Dry climates: Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, most of MP/Rajasthan
- Outdoor temperatures < 42°C
- Open-window setup (cooler needs cross ventilation to push humid air out)
- Single room target
When AC is necessary
- Coastal cities: Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Goa (humidity > 60% makes coolers ineffective)
- Bedrooms in 30°C+ nights
- Closed offices / multi-room cooling
- Health (sleep apnoea, asthma — drier AC air helps)
Inverter vs non-inverter
Non-inverter ACs run at full power then shut off. Inverter ACs ramp down to maintain temperature, using 30-40% less over a 10-hour run. Cost difference: ~₹8,000-12,000 upfront. Pays back in 2-3 summers.
Hybrid: cooler + AC
In Delhi/NCR, run the cooler for the first 2-3 hours of evening (when outside drops to 35°C) then switch to AC at bedtime. Saves ~30% bill versus AC-only.
Buy criteria
- Cooler: Honeycomb pads (last 5 years vs cheap pads' 1 year), 3-speed pump, water-level indicator, ~50 L tank for 6+ hours backup
- AC: 5-star BEE rating, R-32 refrigerant, copper coil, 10-year compressor warranty, anti-bacterial filter
FAQ
Q: Does cooler raise humidity? A: Yes — that is its mechanism. In humid cities (Mumbai), this makes you feel hotter. Coolers are designed for dry-air zones.
Q: How much bigger AC for a hall vs bedroom? A: Rule of thumb: 1 ton per 100 sq ft (closed room, normal sun). 1.5 ton bedroom (~150 sq ft), 2 ton living room (~200 sq ft) typical for North India.
Q: Solar AC — worth it? A: With 3 kW rooftop solar (~₹1.5 lakh) you can offset 10-12 hours of inverter AC daily. Payback ~5 years if you already need solar; otherwise standalone solar AC products are still cost-prohibitive.
