Quick frame: Ashtakoota Gun Milan is the traditional Hindu compatibility test for marriage. 8 kootas, 36 maximum points. Most pandits suggest ≥18 for compatible match; 24-28 is good; ≥28 excellent. Each koota tests a different aspect — varna (spiritual), vashya (mutual attraction), tara (health), yoni (sexual), graha maitri (mental), gana (temperament), bhakoot (family welfare), nadi (progeny).
The 8 kootas in detail
1. Varna (1 point) — Spiritual
Compares the spiritual evolution of bride and groom. Brahmin (highest) > Kshatriya > Vaishya > Shudra. If groom's varna is equal or higher than bride's, full point. Else zero.
2. Vashya (2 points) — Mutual attraction
5 vashya types based on rashi: Manav (humans), Vanachar (forest animals), Chatushpad (4-legged), Jalachar (water), Keet (insect). Same vashya = full point. Compatible pairs = half. Else zero.
3. Tara (3 points) — Health and wellbeing
Counts the lunar mansion (nakshatra) distance between birth charts. 9 taras; some are auspicious (Sampat, Mitra, Param-Mitra), some inauspicious (Vipat, Pratyak, Vadh).
4. Yoni (4 points) — Sexual compatibility
Each nakshatra has a yoni (animal). Same yoni = perfect match. Compatible pairs (cow-horse, lion-elephant) = good. Hostile pairs (cat-rat, snake-mongoose) = poor.
5. Graha Maitri (5 points) — Mental compatibility
Friendship between rashi rulers (planets). Rashi-lord friends → harmonious. Neutrals → workable. Enemies → frequent disagreements.
6. Gana (6 points) — Temperament
3 ganas: Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (demon). Same gana = full points. Deva-Manushya = half. Rakshasa-Deva = zero (most problematic).
7. Bhakoot (7 points) — Family welfare
Distance between rashis. Some pairs are auspicious for family prosperity; others bring "bhakoot dosha" — discord, financial issues. Important for joint family contexts.
8. Nadi (8 points) — Health and progeny
3 nadis: Aadi, Madhya, Antya. Same nadi between partners = nadi dosha (concerns about progeny / childlessness traditionally). Different nadis = full points.
The total of these 8 koota scores = your gun milan number out of 36.

What is bhakoot dosha?
If your rashi-pair has rashis 6/8 or 9/5 distance from each other, it's called shadashtaka or navam-pancham — both forms of bhakoot dosha. Traditionally indicates discord. Cancellation conditions exist (mangal dosha cancellation, friendly rashi-lords) but require pandit consultation.
What is nadi dosha?
Both partners having same nadi (Aadi-Aadi, Madhya-Madhya, Antya-Antya). Traditionally a "health and progeny" concern. Modern view: cancellation possible if rashi-lords agree, or via specific Vedic remedies.
Modern view
Empirical evidence for astrological compatibility is weak. Modern marriages succeed or fail based on values, communication, finances, mutual respect — not astrology alone. But cultural respect for the tradition is strong.
If your gun milan is below 18: don't panic. Many couples below 18 marry happily after parihara puja. If above 18: don't treat it as license to ignore other compatibility factors.
FAQ
Q. Where do I get the actual koota scores? A. From a pandit who reads janma kundli, or astrology software (Drik, Mpanchang, AstroSage). They use birth time + place + DOB to compute exact koota points.
Q. Manglik dosha — is it part of gun milan? A. No, separate check. Mangal in 1/4/7/8/12 from moon = manglik. Both partners being manglik is considered "cancelled".
Q. Score 12, parents pushing for marriage — what to do? A. Either (a) postpone until parihara puja done, (b) seek pandit's second opinion, (c) marry anyway (modern choice). Score-only decisions ignore real compatibility.
Q. Inter-caste marriage — does this matter? A. Different rashis → fine. Different castes → that's a varna issue, but with cancellation conditions. Hindu marriage law (1955) doesn't require gun milan; it's purely traditional.
