Indian tech levels — L3 to L8 explained (FAANG, Indian unicorns, services)

A clear map of engineer levels at FAANG India, Indian unicorns, and services companies. What L3-L8 means, comp ranges in 2026, and how levelling differs.

Quick frame: Indian tech compensation in 2026 is dominated by levelling systems copied from US companies. L3 is entry-level engineer, L4 is mid-level, L5 is senior, L6 is staff, L7 is principal, L8 is distinguished engineer / senior director. Each level roughly doubles compensation. But Indian unicorns and services companies use different ladders — direct comparison is misleading.

Standard FAANG-style ladder (Google, Meta India, Amazon India)

Level Title YOE Total Comp (₹/yr, 2026)
L3 / SDE-1 Software Engineer 0-2 ₹35-55 lakh
L4 / SDE-2 Software Engineer II 2-5 ₹50-90 lakh
L5 / SDE-3 Senior Software Engineer 5-9 ₹85-160 lakh
L6 / SDE-4 Staff Engineer 9-14 ₹160-280 lakh
L7 Principal Engineer 14-20 ₹280-500 lakh
L8 Distinguished Engineer 20+ ₹500-1,000+ lakh

These are total compensation (base + RSU vesting + bonus). Base salary is typically 50-65% of TC; rest is stock and bonus.

Indian unicorn ladder (Flipkart, Razorpay, Zerodha, Swiggy)

Level Title YOE Total Comp (₹/yr)
SDE-1 Software Engineer 0-2 ₹18-30 lakh
SDE-2 Sr. Software Engineer 2-5 ₹28-55 lakh
SDE-3 Lead Engineer 5-8 ₹55-90 lakh
Architect Tech Lead / Architect 8-12 ₹85-150 lakh
Director Engineering Director 12-18 ₹150-280 lakh

Cash component is higher (70-80%); ESOPs add 20-30% on paper but liquidity uncertain till exit/IPO.

Services ladder (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture India)

Level Title YOE Total Comp (₹/yr)
Trainee Systems Engineer 0-1 ₹3.5-5 lakh
Software Engineer SE 1-3 ₹4-7 lakh
Senior SE SSE 3-5 ₹7-12 lakh
Tech Lead TL 5-8 ₹12-20 lakh
Manager PM / EM 8-12 ₹18-32 lakh
Architect / Sr. Mgr SA 12-18 ₹28-50 lakh

Services pay flat cash; minimal stock; performance bonus 5-15%.

Why L4 (FAANG) vs SDE-3 (unicorn) is not equivalent

Title is not a fair proxy. A 5-year FAANG L4 has typically:

  • 3-5× the comp of a 5-year unicorn SDE-3
  • Larger system scale (1B+ users vs 50M)
  • More structured tech promotions (defined rubric)

But unicorn SDE-3 may have:

  • Stronger product / business exposure
  • Faster IC-to-management path
  • More autonomy on architecture decisions

Indian-origin global rotations

Many Indian engineers are hired into FAANG India then rotate to Bay Area / Seattle / Dublin. US comp roughly 2-2.5× INR equivalent, but living costs are 2-3×. Most return to India after 3-5 years for net wealth and family.

What about "tech " vs "non-tech" companies?

Org type Comp ratio (vs FAANG)
FAANG India / Microsoft / Stripe 1.0× (baseline)
Top unicorns (Razorpay, Zerodha) 0.6-0.8×
Mid-tier unicorns 0.4-0.6×
Series A/B startups 0.3-0.5× cash + ESOPs
Top services (TCS, Infosys) 0.15-0.25×
Banks / non-tech corporates IT 0.25-0.40×

How to negotiate level upgrades

  • Bring competing offers — one or two letters at the next level make HR move
  • Document scope (team size, system scale) for level fitment, not just years
  • For lateral entry, ask for "levelling exception" if you ran a similar scope at a smaller company

FAQ

Q: Is L4 the new senior? A: At Google/Meta, no — L5 is "Senior Software Engineer". L4 is mid-level. At Amazon, SDE-2 (≈ L5 internal) is mid-senior. Levels can drift between companies.

Q: How fast can I go from L3 to L5? A: Average 5-7 years. Top performers do it in 4. L3 → L4 takes 18-24 months; L4 → L5 takes 2-3 years. L5 → L6 is often the toughest jump.

Q: Are levels portable across companies? A: Roughly. A Google L5 can usually negotiate Meta E5 or Amazon SDE-3. Cross to non-FAANG and titles may shift down (services architect ≠ FAANG L6).
